By-Design Charrette @ City of Woodland

Friday, September 29, 2017 (All day)

Dear CNU-California Members,

Our CNU California Chapter, in collaboration with the City of Woodland, the County Fair Mall owners, and the greater community, will host our annual By-Design Charrette to plan for the Suburban Retrofit of Woodland’s County Fair Mall from Friday September 29th through Tuesday October 2nd. The plan will help attract the necessary investment and development interests to create a walkable, mixed-use center for living, shopping and working within the boundaries of the existing Mall site, most likely in block-scale increments. We will establish a design studio within the Mall and intend to hold public meetings there on Friday evening, Saturday, and possibly Monday evening there before Tuesday evening’s formal presentation to Council in Chambers.

We are asking for volunteers for our Charrette Team to offer a proactive, multi-disciplinary approach to restoring our communities and an opportunity to engage city staffs, officials, and citizens in the process. The City of Woodland is located 5 miles due east of the Sacramento International Airport on Interstate 5 (and 5 miles due north of Davis and Interstate 80 on State Hwy 113/Vic Fazio Hwy). Meaning, it is easy to fly/drive to from everywhere in California. We have currently reserved hotel rooms for 15 people and are flexible volunteer times and dates.

Know that we have a core team leading the charrette in are need of anyone’s expertise to support or lead initiates (from interns to principals). Our Board agreed on Woodland as its target city this year with the mall as its site, in part because we can concurrently address the massive shift in retail and malls and shopping centers in particular, while transforming these sites into uses that reflect the housing, shopping, and entrepreneurial space needs of millennials, seniors, and those in between.

Please contact Howard Blackson and/or Stephen Coyle with any volunteer RSVP responses and/or questions. Please feel free to offer comments and suggestions. Our annual Charrette offers communities the means to forge value-adding plans that are memorable and implementable using our collective expertise. I hope you will join us.
